On Thursday 7 July, our CEO Daniele Basso presented the progress of the HB Ponics project during EUBCE 2020 (European Biomass Conference and Exhibition).

The presentation “Hydrothermal carbonization of digestate: Semi-continuous analysis of liquid compounds”, held during the session “Processes and Products of Pyrolysis and Hydrothermal Processing”, aroused the interest of the participants as it focused on an innovative AHL sampling and analysis technique based on the semi-continuous liquid extraction during the HTC reaction.

The scientific community present at the event was impressed because current analysis practices are carried out only at the end of the reaction, leading to a loss of valuable information regarding the evolution of the compounds within the liquid over time and, above all, increasing the number of tests to be carried out if the composition is to be identified at different time intervals.

With more than 1550 experts from 87 countries around the world, EUBCE is one of the leading conferences in the field of biomass valorization. Claudes Turmes (Minister of energy of Luxembourg) and Maria Gracia Carvalho (Minister of energy of Portugal and currently Member of the European Parliament) underlined how the issues discussed at the conference are crucial in modern European policies between Green Deal and Recovery Plan.

Achieving climate objectives must necessarily focus on bioeconomy, with sustainable production of bioenergy and biomaterials as the leitmotiv for a policymaking which is long-term oriented and aims at the resilience of Europe and the world.

The thermal post-treatment of manure-based digestate termed hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) could represent a sustainable alternative to its common treatments and could be of considerable importance to limit the problems related to land spreading. The HTC process leads to nutrient-rich solid (hydrochar) and liquid (aqueous HTC liquid, AHL) by-products. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of both HTC by-products to be used in soilless culture systems as either growing medium and fertigation solution. To this purpose, the HTC process was performed in a batch reactor, by varying the operating temperature and residence time, to assess the influence of these parameters on the chemical-physical characteristics of the hydrochars and AHLs. Both HTC by-products were characterized in terms of pH, electrical conductivity, and mineral concentrations by ICP-OES. Moreover, the AHLs and the hydrochar extracts were characterized by HPLC to determine the concentration of organic acids (i.e. lactic, formic, acetic, and fumaric acid), sugars (i.e. glucose), and furan-type compounds (i.e. HMF and furfural). Germination tests with cress seeds were also performed to assess possible phytotoxic effects of the HTC products.

The results showed that the temperature of the HTC process affected the composition of the by-products more than the process time. The chemical composition in terms of macro- and micronutrients of the AHLs was comparable to that of a conventional nutrient solution. Heavy metal concentrations were below the threshold of pollutants fixed by Italian law (D. Lgs. n. 75/2010). Germination tests revealed that the as-is hydrochar was phytotoxic to cress seeds while hydrochar extracts (1:10 and 1:20 m/v) allowed the seed germination, yet with a 50% reduction compared to the control.

In conclusion, the AD-HTC coupling could represent a sustainable practice in the field of biomass and waste conversion, since a management strategy, aimed at reducing and recycling the amount of waste, is needed.

This research has been carried out under the project “HB Ponics” (FESR1104; EFRE-FESR 2014- 2020; CUP: B51B 17000860008), financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Investment for Growth and Jobs Programme 2014-2020.

During the discussion of his work called “Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) of manure-based digestates: the use of by-products in soilless cultivation systems”, several analyses and results were presented in order to explore the potential benefits of this particular type of biomass recovery systems.
Following is the abstract of the thesis project:

“The application of digestate, which is produced in biogas plants, on agricultural fields is becoming an important challenge and is therefore regulated by European Union directives. Large amounts of digestate may accumulate, especially in areas with high density of biogas plants, and thus are considered as wastes. In order to cope with this issue, the accumulated digestate could be used as feedstock in a Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) process from which solid, liquid and gaseous products are formed and could be used for different applications.

In this thesis, the anaerobic digestate, deriving from the biogas Wipptal plant, was treated through a HTC process and the chemical and physical properties of the by-products (liquid – AHLs and solid – hydrochars) were analysed in order to verify their possible use as NS or substrates in Soilless Cultivation Systems (SCS).

The chemical composition of the AHLs was comparable to that of a conventional NS, except for some parameters. Thus, with some adjustments in pH, EC and nutrients, depending on the plant needs, it could be possible to use the AHLs for plant growth. The result of the germination tests led to the conclusion that it can be favourable to mix hydrochar with other growing media (GM) to reduce the phytotoxicity. Treatments of acidification and salt washing of hydrochars might represent a possible solution to reduce pH and EC and thus to use the hydrochars as GM.

Finally, we observed that the temperature of the HTC process had a greater influence on the composition of the by-products than the process time. In conclusion, the digestate could have a high potential to be used as feedstock in HTC processes, if the main goal is to use the hydrochar as substrate and the AHLs as nutrient solution in SCS.”

One of the objectives of the HB Ponics project is the use of bio-based byproducts for soilless culture applications. The following poster, presented at the III International Symposium on growing media, composting and substrate analysis, describes the project aimed at characterizing both AHLs and hydrochars in order to evaluate their potential use in a soilless cultivation system (SCS).

The lab tests highlighted that since the growing media of the future must be available, affordable, and sustainable and we need a waste management strategy, aimed at reducing, reusing, and recycling, the coupling of AD with HTC could represent a sustainable practice in the field of biomass and waste conversion.

In this regard, several sources were examined for extrapolating trends and peculiarities of the anaerobic digestion market.

In the last 10 years, the biogas production market showed a constant increasing trend reaching almost 17.500 installed plants in EU [1] (Figure 1).

Figure 1 – Development of EU biogas plants between 2009 and 2017

Germany leads the European market with the 63% of the installed capacity (10.971 plants), whereas Italy settle itself at around 1.655 biogas plants active at a national level. [1]

Feedstocks used for generating biogas in anaerobic digestion plants are mainly coming from agricultural sector, with the remaining substrates being composed by sewage sludge, OFMSW and other landfilled waste (Figure 2). [1]

Figure 2 – Relative use of different AD feedstock types according to number of biogas plants

Current research activities are focused on understanding how to effectively exploit the energy and material content in the digestate, including the EFRE-FESR HB Ponics project. In particular, one of the objectives is to find a solution capable of treating this feedstock by also ensuring a higher economic and environmental sustainability level with respect to current digestate treatment processes which mainly include:

Composting

Incineration

Landfilling

Direct agricultural use

This kind of approaches are usually linked to a high need of conditioning processes that are in most of the cases source of an increment in operating costs. In addition, the environmental impact of landfilling and incineration is unsustainable, especially considering the rate of growth in the generation of such kind of biodegradable products. In the last few years, several papers addressed the extraction of valuable products from digestate in order to elevate the existing systems towards Circular Economy. However, only few biogas production plants implemented this kind of measures. The aim of the HB Ponics project is therefore the creation of the link between current technologies and a more sustainable use of natural resources.
