HBI Technology

THE ISSUE

Every year in Italy, more than 3.4 million tons of sludge from urban wastewater treatment are sent to incineration for disposal. This amount is growing every year ( CAGR 6%) and more than 60% of this sludge is not treated efficiently and sustainably.

These quantities are expected to increase because of the extension of sewerage networks, the enhancement of urban sewage treatment, and the upgrading of currently substandard sewage treatment plants, in addition to the modernization of existing treatment plants.

53.5 percent of the sludge produced nationwide in 2020 was sent for disposal. According to Ref Laboratory's position paper No. 225 (https://laboratorioref.it/), about 1.9 mln tons/year of sludge is being mismanaged (i.e., sent for disposal) or not at all managed. In addition, about 220 thousand tons of sludge is being exported.

THE SOLUTION

HBI has developed and patented a polygenerative technology that treats sewage sludge in a circular manner by minimizing its volume in output, producing renewable energy, and extracting critical raw materials. Our technology can reduce the volume of sludge by more than 90 percent before it is disposed of, significantly reducing environmental impact.

In November 2022, the performance of the HBI technology was certified ETV (Environmental Technology Verification, a European-recognized certificate) by Rina
